The story behind the words: According to his secretary, Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Pope Benedict XVI's last words were heard by a nurse in the early hours of December 31st, several hours before he died: "with just a whisper of a voice, but in a clearly distinguishable manner," he said in Italian, "Lord, I love you!" These words echo a reflection Pope Francis shared in June 2016 on the 65th anniversary of Benedict's priestly ordination, recalling Jesus's question to Simon Peter: "Do you love me?" — the very foundation, as Benedict himself wrote, of true shepherding in the Church.
